Hotel Miró : Bilbao, Basque Country

Walking into Hotel Miró reminds one a bit of entering a museum, marble floors, lots of light, and art on the wall.  It makes sense, considering this luxury boutique hotel is located a mere 200 meters from The Museum in Bilbao, Basque Country.

The star here is definitely the view. When fashion designer Antonio Miró set out to design the hotel, he did his best to not detract from the work of art outside the window, Bilbao’s number one tourist attraction: the Guggenheim. For that reason, you’ll find clean lines, minimal furniture, and an emphasis on service and personalization instead of opulent luxury.  Everyone from Jeff Koons to Bianca Jagger has slept in the Miró.

A small but well-appointed bar and lounge area features on the first floor, with some fun jars of candy and snacks that are the guests' for the taking. Coffee and tea are complementary, and wine is very well-priced and poured until 10:30 pm.  The rest of the hotel is all about understated class, with some beautiful private-collection art and photographs from Spanish artists.

Breakfast is served downstairs and features a bounty of local products, and really serves as a great example of what a complimentary hotel breakfast should be. Nothing out there, but the perfect version of each element: local jams, a well-known artisan’s breads, and fresh-squeezed juices.

The 50 rooms start from around €100, and there are three levels of suites: Master, Junior, and Relax, the latter so named not for size but for incredible views of the Guggenheim.
